Andy Sofyan Effendi Thahir
"Patient care should always be grounded in clinically based data findings so that appropriate treatment can be achieved. Additionally, full and comprehensive attention must always be given from the doctor to the patient."
Professional Background
  • What is your primary area of veterinary expertise?
    General practitioner, Anesthesia & Analgesia.
  • How many years of experience do you have in veterinary practice?
    7 years
  • Have you pursued any specialized training or certifications?
Yes, I’ve pursued additional training and Seminars in Anesthesia & Analgesia, Internal medicine, Emergency & Critical Care to deepen my clinical knowledge and improve diagnostic accuracy in these areas.
  • What types of animals do you have expertise in treating, and are there specific species you are particularly skilled with or passionate about caring for?
I have expertise in treating a wide range of species across both small animal and wildlife medicine.
In the wildlife field, I have examined and performed anesthesia on various species, particularly primates such as gibbons, slow lorises, orangutans, long-tailed macaques, and pig-tailed macaques, as well as other species including sun bears and deer.
In the small animal field, I have extensive hands-on experience in anesthesia and medical care for dogs, cats, rabbits, sugar gliders, bats, snakes, and lizards
Patient Care Approach
  • How would you describe your approach to patient care and client communication?
My approach to patient care is centered on evidence-based medicine, precision, and individualized treatment. I prioritize accurate diagnostics, structured decision-making, and careful monitoring to ensure both safety and effectiveness in every case. In critical or surgical situations, I focus on stability, pain management, and patient comfort throughout the process.
When it comes to client communication, I value clarity, empathy, and transparency. I aim to explain medical findings and treatment options in a way that is easy to understand, while also being honest about prognosis and costs.
  • What strategies do you use to ensure a positive and comfortable experience for both pets and their owners?
I ensure a positive and comfortable experience by combining low-stress, compassionate handling and individualized care for each pet with clear, empathetic communication that keeps owners informed, supported, and actively involved in every step of the treatment process.
Special Interests and Focus Areas
  • Do you have specific interests or focus areas within veterinary medicine (e.g., surgery, dentistry, preventive care)?
Yes, I have a strong interest in anesthesia and analgesia, as well as emergency and critical care. I am particularly passionate about optimizing anesthetic protocols, ensuring effective pain management, and providing safe perioperative care. In addition, I enjoy the challenges of stabilizing critical patients, making rapid evidence-based decisions, and delivering intensive monitoring to improve patient survival and recovery outcomes.
  • Are there particular cases or conditions that you find especially rewarding to work on?
I find the most rewarding cases are those that challenge both my clinical skills and decision-making under pressure. For example, I have managed emergency patients presenting with dyspnea, cyanosis, and severe cardiovascular compromise, where rapid intervention successfully stabilized their condition. I also encountered a patient who went into respiratory distress on the surgical table, and with immediate endotracheal intubation and controlled ventilation, I was able to restore stable breathing and ensure the surgery proceeded safely. In another case, I performed a complex surgical procedure lasting over six hours, which required sustained focus, precision, and careful anesthetic monitoring throughout. These experiences are especially meaningful to me because they highlight the importance of preparation, rapid response, and resilience in achieving positive outcomes for critical patients.
Client Interaction and Education
  • How do you educate and involve pet owners in the care and well-being of their animals?
I educate and involve pet owners by explaining medical findings and treatment options in clear, simple terms, while also emphasizing preventive care and home management. I encourage owners to ask questions, provide written instructions or follow-up plans when needed, and keep them updated throughout hospitalization or recovery. By combining transparency, empathy, and continuous guidance, I ensure that owners feel confident, supported, and actively involved in their pet’s well-being.
  • What advice do you commonly provide to pet owners for maintaining their pets' health?
I commonly advise pet owners to focus on preventive care, which includes routine vaccinations, regular deworming and parasite control, balanced nutrition, and maintaining an ideal body weight. I also emphasize the importance of regular check-ups and early diagnostics to detect disease before it becomes severe. Additionally, I encourage owners to monitor behavioral or physical changes at home, as early recognition and timely veterinary care are key to maintaining long-term health and well-being.
